The Stones We Throw Have Now Become Bullets
by Jennifer L.G. Wallace, Ed

I have been visiting pages of the pro-family, anti-drug user sites. They think marijuana legalization will be bad for the family. What about the family of Tom Crosslin? What about Rolland's son? Was the prohibition of marijuana good for their families? Did these men deserve to die? What gives these groups the idea that people deserve to be punished for their use of marijuana? From the Bible? No indeed. Do they care? That remains to be seen.

The deaths of Grover 'Tom' Crosslin and Rolland Rohm may not generate a lot of interest in the Christian community due to the accusation of drug and weapon charges. God takes the death of every man seriously though - Genesis 9:5,6 - "And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man." For this reason, we will shed some light on what this incident begins and ends with, the prohibition of cannabis.

The laws that prohibit the use of marijuana is a man-made law that directly violates God's word on a number of grounds -

  • Genesis 1:11-13, 29-31 - God created all seed-bearing plants, declared them good and gave them to man.
  • Romans 12:17-19 - we are to live peaceably with all men, as much as it is up to us;

  • We are not to judge those outside of the body of believers or those within -

  • I Corinthians 5:12 - "What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?"
  • Romans 14:4 - "Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand."
  • James 4: 11,12 - "Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor?"

  • Many say that these laws are necessary to keep children safe from drugs. For the Christian, this is not an adequate defense. The motivator is fear and we are to have no fear John 4:18 states "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

    The sacrifice of others for the sake of our children is contradictory to the requirements of following Jesus Christ - Matthew 10:37,38 - "...if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of me." and contrary to the example set - God sacrificed His own Son to spare the world, He did not sacrifice the world to spare His Son. We are also told to train our children in the way they should go and when they grow old they will not depart from it. That is a promise and God is the ultimate promise keeper, oh ye of little faith.

    While submitting to the governing authorities is frequently used attempt to justify the laws that prohibit cannabis, the following instructions concerning justice and defending the oppressed, are barely known -

  • Isaiah 10:1 - "Woe to those who declare unjust laws and issue oppressive decrees",
  • Zechariah 8:16-17 - "These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; do not plot evil against your neighbor, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this," declares the LORD.

  • False witnesses have poured out lies concerning cannabis consumption, condemning that which is not condemned by God. Their feet have been quick to rush to evil and devise wicked schemes in the form of unjust laws and oppressive decrees. As a result, innocent blood has been shed. There will be no justification for the reasons given and their blood will be on the hands of those that support these laws.

    Proverbs 6:16-19 - "There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers."
