02/28/2003: "Resource in Focus - Teachers Against Prohibition"

"Teachers Against Prohibition opposes criminal prohibition of drugs. Not only does it subject otherwise law-abiding citizens to arrest, prosecution and imprisonment for what they do in private, but prohibition is a proven failure as a drug control strategy. In trying to enforce the drug laws, the government violates the fundamental rights of privacy and personal autonomy that are guaranteed by our Constitution. TAP believes that unless they do harm to others, people should not be punished -- even if they do harm to themselves."

I have been a parole officer in ohio for 24 years. I,ve heard prison guards laugh out loud saying "Thank God for crack cocaine", and remarks similar to that by people in the corrections system. Meanwhile some of these same people will get drunk and laugh at themselves monday morning at the stupid things they did. The hypocrisy is sickening. Surely crack and heroin etc. are dangerous but we need to get rid of this law enforcement policy towards drug use. The politicians are the worst for their lack of courage and leadership on this matter. Oh well thought I,d add my two cents worth.
