12/13/2002: "Somebody's Son"

Imagine if you will that your son is at college. He has some friends at home that would like to meet his friends at college and vice versa. Both sets of friends are involved in the drug trade and they tell your son that they will give him $1500 for making the introduction. Now imagine, that in addition to that hefty finder's fee, which could be difficult for a college student to turn down just for introducing his friends, your son receives three life sentences without parole for that same introduction.

Gone. Gone from your daily life. Gone from your holiday celebrations. Gone from not only your present, but your future as well. Neither of you will live to see him be a free man. His one chance at life...gone.

No, he's not your son, but he _is_ somebody's son. His name, Clarence Aaron. A victim of snitches and mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines. Two of the most vicious and destructive weapons of the war on drugs, where the punishment does not necessarily have to fit the crime and cruel and unusual punishment has no meaning.

Please take the time to learn more about Clarence's story at PBS's Frontline website, sign the petition for Clarence to receive clemency from President Bush and show your support and raise awareness by contacting the Criminal Justice Policy Foundation for a free "Free Clarence Aaron" bumper sticker.

"The ruthless will vanish,
the mockers will disappear,
and all who have an eye for evil will be cut down-
those who with a word make a man out to be guilty,
who ensnare the defender in court
and with false testimony deprive the innocent of justice."
(Isaiah 29:20-21 NIV)

"Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for
like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die
away. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe
pasture. Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of
your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do
this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of
your cause like the noonday sun."
(Psalm 37:1-6 NIV)
